Installing manual 4/5 speed transmission to a 2.2 gas engine. Below are some of findings learned during researching my project. The list is probably not all that has to be done but is a start. To install the Diesel manual 4 or 5 speed transmission to a 2.2 gas engine, the following parts and modifications are necessary. 1. Complete 4 or 5 speed transmission to include rear mounts. 2. A gas engine manual transmission flywheel or a diesel flywheel modified to have a pickup plate for the gas engine TDC sensor to read. This is how the 2.2 knows when to fire the plugs and is a part of the automatic transmission drive plate. This signal is modified by the ECU for correct advance/retard etc. 3. A complete clutch operating system (pedal assy, cable, and necessary hook up if cable operated and Pedal assy, clutch master cylinder hosing, slave clutch cylinder if hydraulic. 4. Electrical system changes to the engine electrical and control system. 5. You will need to drill a precision located hole for the TDC sensor and drill and tap for the bolts to secure the sensor in the diesel transmission bell housing to match the one in the automatic transmission bell housing. Mobility in the USA offers this service but by careful measurement you should be able to do it. It must be located to "see" the relucter plate and have a clearance of .05 to 1 mm / 0.20 to 0.039 in. between the tip of the sensor and the plate. If you change over the whole diesel/transmission as an assembly, you don't have to go to all the trouble of obtaining or modifying as above. In my humble opinion, I think I would go straight to the second choice. Larry S. Hi guy's have spent all day on the phone to Renault and geabox specialist and still no one can supply ratios. This is taken from a Haynes manual covering the Renault Espace from 1985 to 1996 ENGINES 2.0 LITRE AND 2.2 LITRE PETROL/GAS 2.1 TURBO DIESEL All models have front wheel drive with a 5 speed manual transmission. Specifications Type..........Five forward speeds [all synchromesh] and reverse Designation....NG3 Gear ratio 1st............4.09:1 2nd............2.17:1 3rd............1.40:1 4th............0.97:1 5th............0.78:1 Reverse........3.54:1 Final drive ratio......3.22:1,3.44:1,3.55:1 or 3.77:1 according to model and year which dosn't really help to find which goes with what for the final drive but the gear ratios might be of some use CHEER'S ALAN. Hi people, don't know whether this'll help at all but we noticed the debate about ratio's etc and thought we'd do a little digging in our private archive. We've tried UK hayne's manuals for Renault Espace but have had a lot more sense from the very cheap Peter Russek manuals sold throughout the EU, Youi have to watch them a bit cos they cut corners and arn't always 100% accurate but we've learnrd a lot from using ours. There are 2 relevant to our vans, maybe more, & they are: Renault J8S Diesel' engine only, & Renault Trafic ( petrol models ) which covers all the rest of the van excluding the diesel engine, They are basic manuals giving service tool tips but also improvisational ways round things. They also say this on the transmission topic: Transmission Type 389 Type Designation 4 speed trans. F.W.D NL2 or NE2 4 speed trans R.W.D NO2 5 speed trans F.W.D NL5 or NE3 5 speed trans R.W.D NO5 Ratio's 4speed 5speed 1 gear 3.82 or 4.10 : 1 4.10 : 1 2 gear 2.18 : 1 2.18 : 1 3 gear 1.41 : 1 0.97 or 0.90 : 1 4 gear .......... 0.81 or 0.676 : 1 5 gear 3.54 : 1 3.54 : 1 Crownwheel & Pinion (diff} Type Hypoid Bevel Ratios: 4 speed 4.12 : 1 5 speed FWD 3.55 : 1 or 3.78 : 1 5 speed RWD 5.86 : 1or 4.875 : 1 or 5.12 : 1 or 5.43 : 1 All seem to have a Reverse gear ratio of 3.54 : 1 Really hope this helps someone and sorry we haven't been to vocal lately but serious health issues have stalled us for now. Regards to all from the UK. BJ & The Gang. Daz I have been following your progress with interest, as I have already done this conversion several times years ago. However, with my various business committments I could not find enough time to sit down and advise you of my experience. However, as you have already found out for yourself the Diesel engine and box will go straight in. However, I assume you have fitted the 57 HP standard asperated engine in place of the 100 HP 2.2. petrol unit? Regretfully this engine is gutless, so don't expect any quick response from it in any way. The engine that would have been more suitable is the one from a turbo charged Espace, although this engine is turbo charged it only has a turbo with a moderate sized venturi on it, but at least it would perform better, but you would need to carry out some modifications to it, such as changing the sump over from an alloy one to a steel one etc. The original 75 HP turbo diesel engine Le Sharo had the largest turbo that could be fitted to it, so that there was a significant increase in power output, but because this engine was always working to the limit it was prone to mechanical problems. Now a possible cause here was because of the high pressure in the combustion chambers fuel passed by the piston rings through into the sump, so when you checked the oil level it looked okay, but it was actually getting thinner. Therefore it was losing its viscosity with the inevitable consequences. I personally used to change my oil twice a year irrespective of how many miles it had done, along with a new filter. Moving on to the 5 speed gearbox, the left hand gearbox is identical to the right hand gearbox - the only difference is the selector quadrant arm. If you look at the selector shaft on the right hand drive gearbox you will find that there is a blanking plug on the opposite side, You will need to remove the selector quadrant from the box and knock out the blanking plug, and then put the blanking plug into where the quadrant came out of. Now, the right hand selector is different to the left hand unit, as the recessed machined selector fork positions are in a different position. Incidentally the Part No. for a left hand selector shaft is R77014-64.093, but I used to saw off the stick location fixture and re-weld it back on to the new shaft that I had turned up in my own workshop. Also it is possible that if a 2.2 engined vehicle autobox does blow up and is beyond repair it is possible to fit a five speed manual box back in its place. If anybody needs information on this conversation I can give them the info they need. Now, if you still have the engine and box that you removed I would be interested in it Daz. Incidentally, I must have by now accumulated one of the largest collections of Le Sharo parts new and secondhand as well as complete vehicles. If anybody needs any parts etc. I might just have it lying around. Just in passing, for anybody interested I wrote about 10 articles on buying and refurbishing Le Sharos for the ARV Magazine edited by Mr. Paul Rees. This publication is a must for all American RV enthusiasts. I believe back issues are still available from him. The feature was published about 6 years ago.
