Fuel Pump Location: The pump is located beneath the floor just forward of the tank. It is secured to a bracket attached to the left side-rail and connected to the tank by fuel hose and clamps . Function: The 12 volt electric pump insures that the system fuel pressure is maintained whenever the engine is starting or running. It is capable of two quarts per minute output and pressure in excess of 43 pounds per square inch (PSI). The pump is polarity sensitive and will turn the wrong direction if the two wires to the system are reversed. This is a Òwet pumpÓ meaning that fuel surrounds the pump internal components for cooling. The pump also contains a check valve to retain pressure in the pump when shut down. Operation: The pump is controlled by the ECU through the Pump Relay. For the pump to operate, several conditions must exist: 1. The ignition switch must be in the start position causing the ECU to closes the pump relay, supplying 12volts to the pump, causing the pump to operate. If the engine fails to start, the pump will stop, preventing fuel flow. 2. If the engine starts and the key switch returns to the run position, the pump relay will continue to supply voltage for pump operation. .If the engine shuts off, the relay opens and pump will stop, even with the key switch on. Maintenance: The pump is basically not reparable. It can be replaced fairly easy by unbolting it from its bracket, removing the hoses (and fittings if required) , installing them on a new pump and then installing the new pump on the bracket Check the bracket carefully, it is in a location that collects moisture/and snow removal salt and is likely to be badly corroded. A new bracket is easy to fabricate. Problems encountered with this pump are: pressure and flow output too low, electrically inoperative, check valve not holding pressure in the pump resulting in longer cranking times, faulty pump relay, ignition/start key switch, ECU, and wiring problems such as loose or dirty connectors or corrosion. The stock Renault pump is still available. Another pump that should be available locally thru the parts houses, is a pump used on some Ford products. Check Ford part number E7TZ9C407B. This pump has been successfully used in fuel injected H-bodyÕs. Draft, see Desk Top for revision.
